The medieval art in the Casentino, Tuscany

Medieval small villages, castles, Romanesque parish churches of the Casentino: they are important proofs that today we inherit from the Middle Ages of the Casentino, a very flourishing period for this Tuscan area.
Also the medieval figurative art of the Casentino has left us a considerable inheritance.
Well-known artists of the time realized, on commission of the lords of the place, many valuable works, mostly paintings on gold backgrounds performed on wooden tables whose most frequent subject is the Madonna with the Child. Paintings with so much symbology that have always fascinated me. Some of these works are preserved in the churches of small centres in the mountain areas. Evident testimony that during the medieval period, in the Casentino, an important history also flew in those places considered today as secondary or lost. Unfortunately during the centuries several of these paintings have been stolen and sold. Today in the territory of the Casentino I have found 27 of them. I have photographed them all, also in their interesting details. This is why I thank the local priests for their availability.
This web page is mostly devoted to these paintings. Some pictures are devoted to frescoes, sculptures and some miniatures of certain manuscripts preserved in the museum of La Verna and in the Library Rilliana of Poppi. Small, tiny, but always valuable forms of art.
