Santa Maria Assunta in Stia, a Romanesque parish church
Tanucci Square in Stia is surely the most beautiful square of the Casentino in Tuscany. The Parish Church of Santa Maria Assunta that overlooks here contribute to rise its value. A building in Romanesque style made build by the Conti Guidi of Porcino around the half of the XII century. In the centuries the church has changed its architectural aspect. In 1776 it was shortened of some meters to line up its façade to the next constructions. A few years before the complete restoration of the apsidal area turn into three chapels. However, when you enter, you sink in that austere and essential atmosphere typical of the Romanesque parish churches. The architectural elements, never modified, that immediately strike your attention are the capitals. They were realized by the same workers who had carved those of the Parish Church of Romena. Here they look more refined and harmonious.
In addition to its three aisles architectural structure, the Parish Church of Stia is a place of particular interest thanks to the numerous and valuable works of art here preserved. Two ceramics attributed to Andrea Della Robbia and several paintings on gold background of medieval age are of particular importance. You can look at all of them in the photographic gallery of this page.
