Castle of Romena in the northern Casentino
The origins of the Castle of Romena in Tuscany seem to go up again to the half of the X century. It was built, as all the castles of the northern Casentino, by the Conti Guidi.
Today only a few of what the castle was in medieval epoch remains; what appears us and that we commonly call Castle of Romena, is in reality only the nucleus of a great fortified complex, protected by two circles of walls with even eleven watch-towers on the outest one.
You could access to the castle over four doors. Today only one of them is still standing and visible: Porta Gioiosa, not far from Porta Baća, opened a few centuries ago and actual access to the castle.
Even if mutilated and very reduced, the Castle of Romena preserves a charm that few other places in the Casentino are able to equal. Its wide lawn surrounded with low walls and three tall medieval towers gives you a unique atmosphere. The architectural rests are few, but they do well realize how much the castle could be imposing in the XIII century, time of its greater splendour. Cypresses edge the walk leading to the Castle of Romena: they have a particular charm, as well as the whole surrounding landscape and the panorama on the Casentino that you can enjoy from here.
We think that Dante Alighieri drew his inspiration from the Casentino for some lines of La Divina Commedia. Nobody knows if this can be true. Certainly after a visit in the Castle of Romena it will awake in you the certainty that the sensibility of the Florentine poet cannot not to have been touched by the beauty and by the mystery of this Tuscan valley. A less known Tuscany, perhaps for this reason most fascinating.
